Nah seriously, it's freightening how many of my friends ( Young People ) are into Coke, it is really experiencing it's renaisance at the moment, very easy to get now.

At least those i play music with are only into Beer and Coffee, so that's fine.

I think the drug myth behind every top-acting player in the 80's is somewhat true. But i think the story has grown everytime it's been told. I've even heard the reason because Steve Gadd's Sticks are black is because he could set up a coke line on em - Now what the F''' is that? [img]graemlins/chat.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/sure.gif[/img]

But i wonder like you guys, how can they pull off a gig while beeing High? if i drink 2-3 beers i will have time difficulties.

I recall in an MD interview Jeff saying that it was important "not to do any dope on the day of a session.....not because dope is bad, but because it can throw your time off" (or something to that effect).

I'm not sure what to read into that. I'm an enormous fan of Jeff the drummer and Jeff the person, but the way this statement came out makes it sound like drugs aren't so bad. I just don't like to see anything from a role-model that even inadvertently trivializes the dangers of drugs.

And about belching on the video....hey, haven't we all been caught on the spot with a little agita at one time or another?!?! [img]graemlins/pizza.gif[/img] [img]eek.gif[/img] Hell, Zappa credited Vinnie on "Joe's Garage" for "drums, percussion, and combustible vapors"....How's that for giving credit where credit is due?? I think the Gadd way and Vinnie way of playing behind the band both have their pro's and con's and that video is a good example of each. It would be interesting to see how Vinnie would play those tunes now.
And that's the first I recall seeing ANYONE do the alternating hand-feet rolls (AKA "Freight Train").

Ben, when you've seen countless Vinnie performances, (as we all have) then as far as I'm concerned, he plays and acts completely different in this one. He seems gittery as walks back and forth around the stage and plays with an arrogance that I rarely see from him. That coupled with the reasons I gave above leads me to believe that he had some extra corricular help for this performance. [img]wink.gif[/img]

It is also not difficult to spot when you take into fact his well documented cocaine use in the 80's and early 90's. I'm not dissing him in any way, it's just that this particular clip has been posted and it is a comment regarding his performance and behaviour. He still roolz - clearly!!


.......as an aside, I saw lead trumpeter Bobby Shew do a masterclass at music college many years ago and I asked him about this particular gig and what memories he had. He said that the most striking thing was backstage, when Weckl and Vinnie were doing blistering warm-ups on a pad for ages, Gadd sat quietly, singing his two tunes to himself and clicking the sticks in order to get the correct tempo!

You can clearly hear a marked difference in the way the band plays for Weckl and Vinnie as opposed to Gadd. Dave and Vinnie are more concerned with filling out every gap and setting up and catching every hit the band makes. This clutters the music and ultimately, doesn't allow it to breath.
When Gadd plays, the band just sounds so much better, they start to phrase Basie style and play behind the beat. The music feels so much more relaxed and swings harder than the other performances. I would say that Gadd's playing is so much more musical and gracious than the other two who are playin for the drummers rather than the music.

I know that it was an event for drummers in memory of the worlds greatest drummer, but when you do a nuts 4 bar break and fills as Vinnie did on that night, surely the band can't relax for a second as they are all counting like mad and afraid of comming in spare. Therefore the music is going to sound tense as a result.

It's difficult to sound forthright without incriminating yourself on this subject.....but let's just say I know what you mean.

I have seen Vinnie loads of times both live and on clips........I promise you when I saw this clip (it's the first time I have seen it strangely) my eyebrows lifted with exactly the same thought you have articulated above. You are obviously a braver cat than I!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah, well I hear what your are saying. He does seem knida nervous and spastic during the part when he is talking to the audience.

Well, for Gadd, everyone seems to think he was wired at the Zild Day in NYC taping.

But I don't know. Buddy was a proponent of weed but still played hyper as hell.
